Persuasive Essay

You will choose a side (agree or disagree) on one of the following two topics:

  • The overuse of electronics (cell phones, television, computers, video games, etc.) adversely affects society. (Agree or Disagree)
  •  Cell phones should be allowed in schools and are not a distraction to learning. (Agree or Disagree)

You will research your topic ONLY on the websites with the articles provided (you may ask for approval to use a different website, but you must have permission before writing), and you must cite the articles you use for information. Don’t just rely on one website! You must use at least 3 of the websites given for your topic. Website links are below.
Essays must adhere to the following format:

  • Introduction with a thesis statement (the final sentence in the introduction).
  • Three reasons why you have taken your position, along with evidence to support your opinions. (Use one paragraph for each reason, resulting in three body paragraphs).
  • Use of at least 1 persuasive technique and 3 persuasive appeals. (See page 555 of the textbook.)
  • Be sure to use facts, opinions (supported by facts), generalizations and even one or two overgeneralizations.
  • A conclusion which restates your thesis statement and leaves readers with something to think about (for instance, a “call to action”).
